The Eastside Elementary School in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin has been closed due to mold being discovered in various classrooms and the mip-eastsideelementary-school-moldlibrary.

School officials said that the school will be closed for two days while teachers and administrators will set up classrooms in alternate elementary schools sites across the district in order to relocate the students.

The Eastside Elementary School Superintendent’s Office had released a letter claiming that the mold is not toxic, but they do not name the mold that was found, nor do they state the spore count levels of the mold report.

This makes me rather suspicious of these claims because I have found that almost all mold that is found in buildings is toxic to some degree to humans. Also, if it wasn’t toxic, then why are they closing the school and relocating the students?

The district sent the following letter to parents:

Dear Eastside Families,

Over the past two weeks, Eastside Elementary was being monitored for high humidity. The high humidity impacted the library and classrooms, and mold has developed. We have been working with Environmental Management Consultants (EMC) on a plan to clean the site and remove the mold. Although the mold is not toxic, we are taking every step possible to clean the school thoroughly by hiring an outside consultant, Servpro.

In order to clean the school in a comprehensive manner, we need to make alternate arrangements for Eastside staff and students. To that end, we are cancelling school for all Eastside Elementary School students on Monday, September 26th and Tuesday, September 27th, 2016 as we develop a relocation plan for our students. On Monday and Tuesday, Eastside faculty will be working to plan instruction and set up classrooms in alternate elementary schools sites across the district.

Eastside Elementary School students will resume classroom instruction on Wednesday, September 28th. Classes will not be held at Eastside Elementary. The Eastside team and the school district administration are working on a temporary student placement plan to relocate Eastside students to other SPASD elementary schools. The communication for this plan, including transportation information, will be sent out on Monday, September 26th by no later than 4:00 p.m. We will send this information out via email, text message and voicemail.

Servpro, a company who specializes in mold cleaning, is using industrial dehumidifiers to decrease the internal school humidity and HEPA air scrubbers to filter the air. Servpro will conduct a comprehensive cleaning of the entire building in partnership with our EMC consultant. EMC and our buildings and grounds staff will complete a full building inspection. Additionally, we will continue to monitor outdoor and indoor humidity levels to schedule a student return.

Both EMC and Servpro have recent similar experiences in other area school districts who have been impacted by the high humidity levels as well. Based on Servpro’s experience with other area schools, we anticipate students and staff will be able to return to Eastside Elementary School in approximately two to four weeks. All after school and evening events at Eastside Elementary School are cancelled until further notice.

As always, student and staff safety is our top priority. We feel confident the plan we have crafted with EMC and Servpro will create a clean environment for all members of our learning community. We apologize for the inconvenience this will cause your family and we will update you throughout the process. Additional information will be sent by 4:00 p.m. tomorrow.

This situation is ongoing. We know you may have questions or concerns, if so please contact us on Monday at (608) 834-6503. Office hours start at 7:30 a.m. and go until 4:30 p.m. Please know that we have the awesome staff at Eastside collaborating with a team of district administrators to ensure we successfully serve our children.

Thank you so much for your patience.
