If you own a Whirlpool, Kenmore or Maytag front-loading washing machine manufactured between 2001 and 2010, you may be eligible for a cash rebate from $50, up to $500 in cash or credit toward a new washer as part of a class action settlement.
Front-loading washing machines have been very popular with consumers over the last decade or so. They use less energy, less water and less detergent. But many brands also harbor a disgusting and dangerous toxic mold problem that has resulted in thousands of complaints over the years.
When people complained, they were told by their manufacturers that they need to routinely clean the washer drum and “leave the door open”. Several consumers tried to get the problem fixed or their money back and found that their manufacturers would not honor their warranties.
Fed up with the mold and abuse, people sought legal counsel which resulted in several class-action lawsuits being filed against front-loader washing machine manufacturers such as Electrolux, Frigidaire, Sears, Kenmore, LG Electronics, Bosch and Whirlpool Corporation. The lawsuits claim the machines are defective in their designs, airtight seals, and did not adequately clean themselves of laundry residue which created a breeding ground for mildew, mold and bad odors.
A settlement was reached this week in several class action lawsuits with the defendants – Whirlpool Corporation (“Whirlpool”) and Sears, Roebuck and Co. (“Sears”) in several class action lawsuits. Defendants deny they did anything wrong. You can click here to see a complete list of the washer models that are included in the settlement, referred to as the “Class Washers.”
If you have a front-loading washing machine manufactured by Whirlpool, Kenmore or Maytag manufactured between 2001 and 2010 and had mold or odor problems, you may be able to get some cash for your problems. But you have to submit a claim by October 11, 2016.
